School bus meets train, child dies. Such a needless tragedy.

Given that it’s required to stop at rail crossings, it seems difficult to imagine this happening unless the driver skipped that step, or there was some sort of mechanical failure.

I can only imagine what the UP engineer was feeling seeing there was a school bus on the tracks, and knowing there was nothing they could do to stop in time.

PSA: don’t ever take on a train. They’r e really, really big and aren’t so good on the brakes. They rely on signalling and are usually going too fast to stop if an un expected obstacle appears.

The driver could have had a medical issue as well. The story said there wer e pieces of broken crossing gate laying on the ground, and the lights were still flashing.

for the rest of his life...

But that whole situation sounds odd - the 13 yo kid that was killed was found outside the bus at the crossing, the other injured girl was still inside the bus and the driver was able to get out after the train stopped down the right of way? Pics show the track was straight, in a relatively open area and it stopped quickly so the train could not have been going very fast. Very odd...

Yeah details are pretty scarce here. Given the point of impact on the bus, it was almost halfway across the tracks when the train hit. So it must have either blown through the gate at the worst time, or stalled in the worst place and the gate broke because the bus was still in the way.

For now I’m going to guess that he tried to beat the train? Because you’d think that if he did everything right and the bus just stalled on an open track, everyone would have had time to escape before the train arrived. Who knows, maybe it was a little of both. Maybe it did stall, and he was too stubborn and desperate about trying to restart it.
